CPE
TECHNICIAN

The CPE Technician will be responsible for a wide range of telecommunications equipment installations and maintenance services, as well as generating sales to business customers. Primary emphasis will be on customer network wiring and PBX/key systems, as well as providing technical support for telecommunications equipment in general.  The Business Systems & Sales Supervisor and/or the Lead CPE Technician will assign specific job duties to each CPE Technician to ensure coverage of all responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities- other duties may be assigned.

  • Receives and processes service and work orders indicating installation requirements or maintenance service problems;
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and equipment manuals;
  • Tests and prepares customer premises equipment to be sold;
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities listed under the Combination Technician Job Description, as needed and as assigned;
  • Coordinates the following services: network wiring and terminations; PBX/key system installations including performing software changes; maintaining subscriber protectors, terminations and grounding; tests, locates and clears station trouble; installation and maintenance of  customer premise wire terminations; testing and preparation of equipment to be sold;
  • Complies with all RUS specifications, industry standards, safety rules and regulations and company policies;
  • Submits time, mileage, and gas tickets; Completes material and equipment charge-outs and credits; Completes all other required forms and/or procedures.

Position and advancement within the wage range established for this position are dependent upon performance and the scope of the duties and responsibilities assigned. 

Personnel Specifications

Education/Experience

Two year electronics degree or equivalent work experience.  Prefer one or more years experience in telecommunications industry.

Job Knowledge

Experience in the installation and maintenance of telecommunications equipment. Experience in customer network wiring including associated electronic equipment.  Experience in PBX/key system areas including servicing telephone lines, instruments, cables, terminals, protection devices, as well as in telecommunications equipment in general.

Related Skills

Use mechanical and electrical power tools.  Physically exerting workload.  Pay close attention to detail, instructions and schedules.  Respond to customers and community to ensure positive public relations.  Able to work under and handle stressful periods when meeting deadlines.  Must recognize that one of the most important performance areas in which the Company functions is public and customer relations; to insure continued growth and success of the Company, the best possible courteous and friendly relationship with customers must be maintained.  Answers customer inquiries in an informal polite manner and refers unanswered questions to the appropriate supervisory personnel.

Additional Requirements

The CPE Technician may be required to participate in the On-Call & Weekend Duty rotation.  This position may also require occasional overtime.

Position Relationships

The CPE Technician reports to the Business Systems & Sales Supervisor.

Internal/External

Establishes and maintains close working relationship with all departments. Coordinates with other departments on the status of installation and service projects.  Serves as a personal link between the Company, customers and the public.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Specialized Training;
  • Plant/electronics experience;
  • Valid Driver's License;
  • Daily contact with customers and the community on service questions and problems;
  • Ability to evaluate, test and repair sophisticated equipment;
  • Preparation of accurate and timely reports, time sheets and work logs;
  • Able to work with minimal supervision;
  • Interest in self-improvement to stay abreast of telecommunications technology and state of the art equipment;
  • Ability to improve or re-design procedures for specific installations/repair problems;
  • Team player and willing to take initiative.
